Since being invited to work with Rick Moran on a couple of occasions on his excellent radio show, Ive always wondered what type of Blogradio show would work for me.

And as such, I think I may have hit on one idea that might be worth the effort:

"Ask A Telecommuter!".

Apparently this is an area that many of you are interested in and its something I know more than a little bit about since I've been doing it for the past 8 years. You would think that most people would be doing it by now, but it comes to my attention that many of you are still getting up in the morning and leaving your home to go to work.

I'd like to do my bit for the worlds climate, for the country and for your well being and put a stop to that anachonism if I can.

I'm thinking that it should be a little streaming video show on "How to do it" in regards to telecommuting, what to look out for while you are doing it, what kind of technology that you need to do it and so on and so forth. General help and support for the aspiring non-commuter class.

SO - whattya think?

Ok - Comments are open now, so if this is something youre interested in covering, speak up.

It's definitely something I'm interested in. I'm a full-time, on-site IT person, but I typically have hands-on work to do two days or less each week unless we've got a big project or rollout going. My biggest concern about not being close is losing the feel for what's going on that I gather just by hearing conversations in the call, a quick chat with a coworker as we get coffee, or even just seeing/hearing what someone is working or struggling with. I've heard all the "telecommuting forces you to use the phone and reach out more" arguments but it still seems like it would be extremely difficult to replace the 10 minute process of walking down the hall and checking in with all my coworkers in the morning or afternoon.

I'd be interested. I have been (mostly) telecommuting since 1987 and entirely telecommuting since 2000. The closest corporate office is 120 miles away, I am in Auburn AL, my actual work team is in Boston MA ... and the rest of the project staff is in Singapore and Beijing.

Frank, I sent you an e-mail about a week ago, but in general, I'd think the following would be good topics:

1) How do you recognize a good proposal from a bad one? What criteria do you look for at your "first triage" and then at your second one, when you've narrowed it down to, what, four or five proposals you are interested in? Probably go through a listing at that link you gave in a previous thread with jobs to show which ones you write off immediately, and which ones catch your eye. Explain why you do both of those.

2) How do you go about estimating what to offer to do a contract for? A breakdown of what rules of thumb you apply would be good.

3) How does someone just starting identify jobs which might not be cost/time effective, but are probably going to be good resume boosts? Related -- What sorts of things are good to put on your CV, and which ones are to be avoided? (other than, "Duh: unhappy customers")

4) What about snags? What kind should you expect, both in mid-stream and closing a project out? How do you protect yourself from getting ripped off once you hand in the working project? What do you do if someone does it anyway?

5) How do you attempt to resolve issues over disputes between the client's idea of what they think they want and what is possible or reasonable given the time/money involved? As the old saw goes, "People want it fast, cheap, and good. I say pick two and call me back."

6) How many proposals do you usually have outstanding? At what point in the completion of your current project do you start looking for new projects (i.e., what kind of lead time do you expect for proposals when you first make them)

A lot of this might be supplemented by a website with some screen caps, and downloadable summaries of job examples you use to show good and bad things to look for(with appropriate identifying data redacted). Discuss matters on the peripheral level on the radio show, then let people review the info on the website for more detail. Possibly add a forum for people to discuss things on consulting -- perhaps with an area "Ask Frank" where you MIGHT choose to answer, possibly with it in mind for part of the radio bit. Also, the whole thing might eventually be aggregated into a book on how to get into consulting -- even if you didn't write it yourself but collaborated with someone who is as good a writer as you are but more interested in spending the time needed to write a book. You provide the background information and advice/editing, someone else does the grunt work.

That's some of my ideas on what would be good to know.
